Climate change and Amazonian sociobiodiversity: perspectives from herpetofauna

Summary

We propose using Amazonian herpetofauna as a biodiversity benchmark to understand and mitigate the impacts of global climate change on Amazonian natural species and populations, through new integrative eco-evolutionary and socio-environmental approaches. The proposal focuses on interaction with riverside communities, establishing four objectives with specific goals: (1) to develop and apply a discourse analysis tool on the relationships between biodiversity and climate and their historical and contemporary changes in riverside communities and villages (applied to traditional communities in the Rio Negro and Araguaia basins, where proposing teams have already established points of articulation and support); (2) to strengthen and expand monitoring and management practices of Amazonian turtle nests and eggs carried out in these riverside communities with the aim of monitoring thermal quality and the impacts of temperature increases on the phenotypic and genetic expression of Amazonian turtle hatchlings and on the sustainable management practices that traditional communities develop, such as Community-Based Tourism; (3) collect and analyze data on Amazonian amphibians and reptiles along environmental gradients to perform predictive modeling of the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, with an innovative approach that integrates ecology, functional phenotypes, genetics, and reproduction and development information (and thus transpose the knowledge acquired in objective 2 to the broad regional scale of the Amazon and transition zones); and (4) based on the discourse analysis of objective 1, develop products for public engagement with science involving the results obtained in objectives (2) and (3) with villages and riverside communities involved in the proposal and sectors involved in decision-making and public policies in conservation, establishing a model for transposing scientific knowledge to local communities that can be applied in different locations in the Amazon region.
